Travis Karl P.

Karl Patrick Travis is Reader in Computational Physics and Nuclear Waste Disposal and leads the Immobilisation Science Laboratory within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The University of Sheffield. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and has over 25 years of experience in computational modelling. He has published widely in the areas of deep borehole disposal (of nuclear waste) and liquid state chemical physics, with a particular interest in non-equilibrium molecular dynamics. He is currently involved in designing concepts for the deep borehole disposal of the UK’s vitrified high-level waste (UK company, Marriott Drilling), Norway’s research reactor spent fuel (with UK-French company Galson-Egis), and a design for a canister to take SMR spent fuel (with the US company Deep Isolation). He is also interested in the application of Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics to solve problems in material physics. In his spare time he enjoys personal fitness and training with weights, offering instruction on a voluntary basis at his local sports center, where he is also a member of the Board of Trustees. Karl is a keen rollercoaster enthusiast and enjoys travelling the world to seek out the most extreme and interesting examples to ride!
