IAN SNOOK PRIZES 2015

2015 IAN SNOOK PRIZE AND IAN SNOOK ADDITIONAL PRIZE

The 2015 Ian Snook Prize ($ 500 US) and the Additional Prize (in the same amount) are awarded to Puneet Kumar Patra in recognition of his original manuscript “Two-Dimensional Time-Reversible Ergodic Maps with Provisions for Dissipation”. The Prize was offered by Bill and Carol Hoover (Ruby Valley Nevada) and the Additional Prize by the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center). The Prize problem was the most interesting description of a time-reversible ergodic map of the unit square into itself. The Prizes were offered to honor the memory of our late colleague, an Australian computational physicist (13 June 1945 – 7 April 2013) who was an unfailing source of encouragement and good humor.

The prize-winning paper will be published in the Computational Methods in Science and Technology (CMST). It will open the 2nd issue of the volume 22.

Puneet Kumar Patra has submitted his PhD thesis, “Identifying Temperature and Related Statistics of Nonequilibrium Steady States” to the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur. His thesis advisor is Professory Baidurya Bhattacharya of the Kharagpur Institute.

We expect to offer 2016 Ian Snook Prize for the most interesting solution of another problem in Computational Statistical Mechanics. Prize-problem suggestions from the readers of CMST are welcome.

  1. The Ian Snook Prize (the Prize) honors an Australian computational physicist (13 June 1945 – 7 April 2013 ) of the best sort: smart but modest, enthusiastic, tireless, supportive, and optimistic.
  2. The Prize is offered by Bill and Carol Hoover (the Organizers) in the amount of 500 USD.
  3. In 2015, the publisher of Computational Methods in Science and Technology (CMST) shall fund the additional reward (the Additional Prize) in the amount of 500 USD for the winner of Ian Snook Prize.
  4. The Prize and the Additional Prize shall be rewarded jointly to one author of the best work – an individual or a team.
  5. The 2015 Prize Problem is to describe a time-reversible ergodic map of the unit square into itself. Some simple examples appear in ‘Time-Reversible Dissipative Ergodic Maps’ by W. G. Hoover, O.Kum, and H. A. Posch in Physical Review E, Volume 53, pages 2123-2129 (1996). The Prize will be awarded to the author or authors of the paper describing the most interesting such map.
  6. Solution papers should be contributed to CMST in the form of a paper of no more than twenty journal pages.
  7. The closing date of the Prize contest is 23:59 GMT on 31st December, 2015. Entries received outside this time period will not be considered.
  8. The evaluation whether and which work deserves the Prize and the Additional Prize shall be made at the Organizers’ discretion.
  9. The Organizers shall acquire the ownership of copyrights to rewarded work at the time the reward is paid.
  10. Computational Methods in Science and Technology (http://www.cmst.eu) is an interdisciplinary quarterly Journal publishing original papers from all areas of computational sciences and related information technologies. The Journal forms a platform to spread pioneering methods and applications among scientists working in many fields related to the areas covered by the journal. CMST is also open to publish monographs and review articles as well as the conference proceedings. See “Notes for Authors” on the Journal’s website.
